General Suggestions On How To Improve Structure In An Essay

Generally, most essays have a five-paragraph structure. However, each paragraph has its own organization that should be taken into account when writing any kind of paper. Here are some basic tips concerning the essential elements of the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

  • The introduction.
  • Your introductory paragraph should include a hook or attention grabber, some background information, and a thesis statement. You can get the reader’s attention by starting with a famous quotation, presenting a striking statistic, or telling an anecdote. The only solid rule is that it should be relevant to your topic. The second part of your introduction should familiarize your reader with your topic and explain why it’s important. This will serve as a lead-in to your thesis. The final sentence of the first paragraph is called a thesis statement. It’s the main idea of your essay, an assertion of your position or opinion that you’ll prove in the body.

  • Body paragraphs.
  • Usually, an essay has three body paragraphs. Since each paragraph presents a separate key idea, there can be even more of them if you want to cover more than three major points. You should know that each paragraph has its own structure. Firstly, you should write one of your main ideas in a topic sentence. It should let your reader know what this paragraph will be about. Then, give enough evidence and supporting details (at least three) to prove that idea. Those can be personal examples, quotations, and statistics. After that, demonstrate how the given evidence proves your idea and how it relates to the thesis. Also, make sure that you provide smooth transitions between paragraphs. For this, use different linking words and phrases at the beginning of and within the sentences.

  • The conclusion.
  • The concluding paragraph is closely connected with the introduction, but they differ in the sequence of presenting information. The conclusion has the reverse structure. It begins with restating or rephrasing your thesis statement. Then, you should proceed to a brief summary of what you wrote in the body paragraphs. Try not to just summarize but synthesize the main points. That means you don’t have to repeat what has already been told but demonstrate how all of your evidence and examples fit together and prove your thesis. In comparison with the introduction, you should end your conclusion with a general statement. You can show the relation of your topic to a broader context or evaluate its importance. Another strategy for closing your essay can be raising a new question or a call to action.
